Screening survey - Dream and Nightmare Laboratory
We would like to ask you some preliminary questions to determine if you would be eligible to participate in the research study.
Aim of study: This study aims to better understand how exposure to media (e.g. movies, social media, video games) before going to sleep can affect sleep and dreams. Specifically, we aim to determine the effects of watching a movie before going to sleep on dream content, emotional character of dreams, and sleep quality.
If you decide to take part in this study, you will be asked to:
Participate in an online information session with the experimenter (on Microsoft Teams; ~30 minutes) and sign a consent form.
Fill out online questionnaires at the beginning of the study (~20 minutes) and at the end of the study (5-15 minutes).
Sleep one night inthe sleep laboratory. Your sleep will be recorded with polysomnography, i.e., electrodes recording your brain, muscle, and cardiac activity. You will be awakened several times during the night to report your dreams (up to 10 times). Auditory stimuli may also be played during your sleep. The laboratory is located at the Center for Advanced Research in Sleep Medicine of the CIUSSS du Nord-de-l'Île-de-Montréal, at the Hôpital du Sacré-Coeur de Montréal (~13 hours / visit, including a 9-hour opportunity to sleep).
Watch a 90-minutes movie before going to sleep during your night in the laboratory. Please note that you will be asked not to consult any digital media (such as your mobile phone) during the evening in the laboratory (except for emergencies). You must also refrain from watching this film again for 9 days following the night in the laboratory.
Fill out a morning dream and sleep diary at home (5-20 minutes, depending on the length and complexity of the dreams reports you provide) each morning for 13 days (starting 4 days before your night in the lab, ending 9 days after your night in the lab).
Fill out an evening mood questionnaire each evening for 8 days following your night in the lab (1-5 minutes per day).
There is no compensation for completing the screening questions. However, if you qualify and do choose to participate in the research study, you will be compensated $150 for completing the study.
Please complete the screening survey to the best of your ability. The survey should take ~10-15 minutes to complete.
We will contact you by email if you are eligible after the screening questions.
Consent form
Please note that this screening survey will ask for some personal information. For this reason, we first ask you to read and sign a consent form before completing the survey.
Your responses will remain confidential and will be stored on a secure server accessible only to the research team. If you are not eligible for the project and request not to be contacted for future studies, your data will be destroyed. Participation in the screening survey is entirely voluntary. You are free to decline participation or leave the survey at any time.
If you want more information about the study before completing the survey, you can contact the research team by email at: reve.cnmtl@ssss.gouv.qc.ca.
